Judge Monguia declared a doubt to someone’s competence and ordered him back into custody simply because he was frustrated that the defendant was talking over him and accusing him of racism. The defendant was perfectly competent and was alleging that the judge was racist towards him, didn’t comply with evidence rules, always brought him in when the courtroom was empty and no one could see these injustices, and refused to unshackle him during proceedings. It was clear that the competence doubt was made simply because Monguia didn’t like him, not because he was incompetent. He also makes decisions on other things like prelims or probation revocation just because he doesn’t like the facts of the crime. He doesn’t consider whether there’s actually enough evidence to legally do what he’s doing

The “Honorable” Enrique Monguia is almost a sick joke. He has horrible judicial temperament, is regularly disrespectful to people in his courtroom, including defendants, witnesses, attorneys, and other court staff, and particularly women. He talks about shooting people on a regular basis. He doesn’t know how to read plain documents. He is irrational, irascible, and intractable. He has no business making any decisions that affect people’s lives and liberty.
